Scam Alert: Gordon County deputies don't call to collect a fine when you miss jury duty

The Gordon County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a phone scam involving callers posing as sheriff’s deputies attempting to collect a fine for missed jury duty.

Sheriff’s office officials say the scammers accuse the person answering of missing jury duty. Some calls have originated from 706-629-3337, and the scammers have used the names, “Deputy Waverley” and “Lieutenant Wakefield.”

According to the sheriff’s department, these callers are not  deputy sheriffs and the sheriff’s office never solicits fines by telephone. Jury summonses are sent by mail or hand delivered.

The department is reminding residents not to give these callers any personal or financial information, or discuss meetings. Recipients of these scam calls are urged to just hang up the telephone.

Regardless of the conversation, the sheriff’s office says 706-629-3337 is not a sheriff’s office number. Detectives have been assigned to search for the true origin of the calls, which are usually cloned, are placed from overseas, or from within the prison system.
