The News: A family of six is safe today thanks to an early morning warning from their two dogs.
Gwinnett County Fire officials say a fire broke out near a trash can outside the Lawrenceville home and spread to a garage that was converted into a living space, the second story of the home and the attic. The dogs began barking shortly before the smoke detectors went off, waking the family and allowing the parents and their four children to exit the home unharmed. The family and both dogs escaped to safety before firefighters arrived.
The Fire: When fire crews arrived at 3:46 a.m. they found heavy smoke billowing from the front of the home. The fire broke through the roof in the converted living space and firefighters deployed multiple hose lines to attack the blaze, bringing it under control.
The cause of the fire has not been determined and is still under investigation.
The Damage: According to a news release from the fire department, the home sustained heavy fire damage to the converted living space, second floor and attic. The rest of the main house sustained moderate smoke, heat and water damage. Due to the aggressive interior fire attack by firefighters, a large two-story addition attached to the rear of the home sustained only minor damage.
The Response: The Gwinnett County Fire Dept. was dispatched at 3:40 a.m. and arrived within six minutes. The fire was brought under control at 4:24 a.m.
