Barbecue and music fans can expect heaping servings of both at the inaugural “Pig Out in the Park” BBQ cook-off on Saturday, June 9 in The Common in Augusta. The city is collaborating with several local businesses to host this new downtown event.

“We expect competing teams to cook through the night to have their entries ready for the judges on Saturday,” said Glenn Parker, director of Augusta’s Recreation and Parks Department. “The teams are battling for the honor of being named Augusta’s Grand Champion 2018.”

Celebrity judges will sample and score each team’s entries in the categories for best chicken, ribs, butts and sauce.

Food lovers will enjoy a variety of food and beverages available from vendors in the park, although cook-off competitors will not be selling their products. Entertainment will include a variety of live music throughout the day by Cricket Ridge, Brooks Hubbard, Bethany & The Southside Boys and Big Sky Revival. Families may bring their chairs and blankets, and enjoy the kids’ fun-zone and other activities.

“We wanted to do something a little different from other barbecue events,” Parker said, “so we’re also including a barbecue cooking competition for kids. These young teams will compete for their own prizes and honors. Our celebrity judges will also determine the winners of the kids’ competition.”

Judges for this inaugural cook-off event will be:
• Minnesota Fattz – iHeart Radio, also participating as talent at the event
• Bob O’Neal – Allstate Insurance Company
• Monique Williams – WRDW NBC 26 TV Personality
• Charlie Williams – Charlie Williams Auto Glass
• Tony Perrotta – BBQ Competition Expert
• Jeff Henderson – BBQ Competition Expert.

This fun and entertaining event begins at 11 a.m. Saturday and continues through the announcement of this year’s winners. The event closes at 6 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, free for children 12 years and under.

Entries for team competition are limited but still available. For details more information on this event, please visit www.pigoutinthepark.org.
